Members of the Lake Forest College Alumni association entertained a renowned fellow alum, baseball pro Ernie Krueger at the Central Chicago Y on LaSalle Street.
Krueger, a 1915 LFC graduate, had lettered for Lake Forest College Athletics in football, basketball and baseball, but it was his talent as a catcher that caught professional interest. He signed with Cleveland’s farm team in 1913, ending his intercollegiate eligibility. Click here for more on Krueger.
Krueger deserved to be “dined and ‘watered.’” Earlier that month, on May 1, he had caught all 26 innings for the Brooklyn Robins in what was then the longest baseball game ever played, running 26 innings and finally called at a 1-1 tie on account of darkness. Click here for more about the game.

MayDays | "Start your engines!"

"May is always a special time for me. Ever since I was 8 years old, I have gone to the Indianapolis 500 over Memorial Day weekend. So far 52 in a row. It’s a pilgrimage- tremendously meaningful for me in many ways. I went to my first race with my father in 1968 and at least 25 more with him- it was always a tradition- different family members and friends depending on the year- but the constant was always our father son time. History is made at the Brickyard each year as it has since the first race in 1911. I guess I’ve seen a fair amount of it in person!
This year- due to the pandemic- the great race has been postponed until later in the summer. I’m looking forward to seeing how the 500 will be run this year! This photo is the view from my dad’s old seat. I sit in it now and when I first arrive I feel him there with me. And when the many pre race traditions- most of which honor our military heroes past and present- take place I am moved emotionally by the pageantry, the love for America, and the famous words “Start your engines!”
It’s history in every sense of the word- May is special indeed!"
